This drawing was created especially for Bloomsday 2017 at the Rosenbach by Robert Berry. Berry is a Philadelphia cartoonist and illustrator renowned for his work in visualizing the novels and short stories of James Joyce. His ongoing graphic adaptation of Ulysses, titled Ulysses Seen, premiered here at the Rosenbach for Bloomsday 2008. Since then he has lectured and exhibited his work at Bloomsdays around the world and now teaches at the University of Pennsylvania. He will be leading one of the Rosenbach’s Ulysses classes this fall. The work is ink on paper and is approximately 12 x 19”.

Rosenbach Ulysses Reading Group

Heralded as one of the greatest novels of the 20th century, Ulysses is also considered one of the most daunting. The Rosenbach offers a welcoming discussion-based environment and unparalleled access to primary resource materials from our James Joyce collection to deepen readers’ understanding of the text and the author himself. First-time Ulysses readers and returning fans alike are welcome in either group. Classes meet once a month from October until June, and participating in the Ulysses Reading Group is the only way to ensure an invitation to read at Bloomsday 2018! Choose from one of two groups that meet on Sunday afternoons from 2:00-4:00 p.m. or Wednesday evenings from 6:00-7:45 p.m. Sunday classes will be led by artist and guest lecturer at Penn, Robert Berry, and Wednesday classes will be led by professor and Bloomsday regular, Ted Howell.

When your tour finishes in Dr. Rosenbach’s personal rare book library you’ll be treated to a special hands-on presentation of the Rosenbach’s Irish collections, which include not only the Ulysses manuscript but also Bram Stoker’s notes for writing Dracula and writings by Oscar Wilde. Led by a member of the Rosenbach staff, your presentation will allow you to touch the objects and experience the delight in trying to decipher Joyce’s hand writing.

This item includes two VIP tickets to a series of four global thought-leader speaker events that will be held between September 2017 and June 2018. Past speakers have included Richard Florida, Clayton Christensen, Sallie Krawcheck, Sheryl Sandberg, Adam Grant and Malcolm Gladwell. Speakers for the 2017-2018 series have not yet been scheduled, but will be consistent with those we have hosted in recent years. VIP tickets include preferred seating for the keynote speaker and a panel discussion, access to a meet-and-greet reception with the keynote speaker, and (in most cases) a recent book by the keynote speaker. Programs typically run from 8:30 to 10:30 am and are held in Center City venues. Two books from the 2016-17 speaker series are included: Competing Against Luck by Harvard Business School Professor Clayton Christenson and The New Urban Crisis by urbanist and University of Toronto Professor Richard Florida.


Ulysses manuscript facsimile

Published in a limited run of 750, this facsimile of the Rosenbach Ulysses manuscript includes three volumes. The first two volumes replicate the manuscript, and the third volume includes an annotated comparison of the manuscript with the first printed edition of 1922.This wonderful reproduction allows anyone to study the differences between the manuscript and the published edition to see how Joyce continually edited his work.
